Scholarships

High School Student

 

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was established on May 10, 1930 and is currently comprised of nine international Greek letter sororities and fraternities:  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

 

A local NPHC was chartered in Columbia, SC on June 8, 1960. The member organizations have a strong focus on community service and uplift. For that reason, this $500 college scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior in a Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, or Newberry County School District that exhibits considerable concern for the community through service.

Scholarship Criteria

1. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enter a four-year college/university in the fall of 2024 and possess qualities of leadership, scholarship, dependability and service Applicant must be attending a public high school in a Richland, Lexington, Fairfield or Newberry County School District.


2.  Applicant must have a cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. 

 

3.  Applicant must upload a completed application and official transcript to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website.


4. Applicant must upload a School Letter of Recommendation from a guidance counselor/director or one of your present/former high school teachers. Recommendation letters should include:  length of time working with student, insight to student’s character, scholastic achievement, testament to student’s community service involvement, etc. Recommendation letter must be signed and submitted on official school letterhead. NOTE: All recommendation letters must be included with your scholarship application.

5. Applicant must upload a Community Letter of Recommendation from a person in the community that can verify a minimum of 3 months continuous community service in the current school year (i.e. your pastor, Sunday school teacher, former/present employer or mentor). Recommendation letter must be signed and submitted on  Recommendation letter should include: length of time working with student, insight to student's character, testament to student's community service involvement, etc. NOTE: All recommendation letters must be included with your scholarship application.


6. All requested items must be included in order for the applicant’s scholarship packet to be considered complete. This scholarship application must be submitted to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website no later than 11:59 p.m. May 24, 2024. Applications that are incomplete and/or not submitted by May 24, 2024 will not be eligible for consideration. 

Scholarship Award Announcement

Scholarship awards will be announced via email by the 2nd week of June 2024

 

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend the NPHC Scholarship Recognition Program, which will be held Sunday, June 23, 2024. Program details will be included in the scholarship award email announcement. 

 

Scholarship awards checks are made payable to the student and are dispersed upon submission of proof of college enrollment by the student and/or official (sealed) transcripts. This is typically a letter from your institution's Enrollment Management. This information is usually submitted in August.

 

Scholarship Application Checklist

Before submitting your scholarship application, please make sure you have included/uploaded the following:
 

1. Completed scholarship application

 

2. Upload Unofficial High school transcript
 

3. Upload Community Service Letter of recommendation from a person in the community that can verify community service activities (i.e. volunteer coordinator, etc.).

4. Upload School Letter of recommendation from Guidance Counselor/Director or present/former high school teacher
 

5. Submit your application to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website by 11:59 p.m. May 24, 2024

College Student

 

A local National Pan-Hellenic Council was chartered in Columbia, SC on June 8, 1960. The member organizations have a strong focus on community service and uplift. For that reason, this $500 scholarship will be awarded to a current college student that is an active, financial member of an NPHC-member organization. The student must exhibit considerable concern for the community through service above and beyond service executed by his/her undergraduate chapter.

Scholarship Criteria

1. Applicant must be a college student and member of an NPHC-member organization attending a four-year college/university in the fall of 2024 and possess qualities of leadership, scholarship, dependability and service. Eligible colleges/universities include Allen University, Benedict College, Columbia College, Morris College, Newberry College, University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC), and Voorhees College.

 
2.  Applicant must have a cumulative college undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. 

 

3.  Applicant must upload a completed application and official transcript to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website.


4. Applicant must upload one letter of recommendation from a person in the community that can verify a minimum of 3 months continuous community service in the current school year above and beyond service initiatives implemented by the undergraduate chapter of membership (i.e. your pastor, non-profit organization volunteer coordinator, etc.). Recommendation letters should include:  length of time working with student, insight to student’s character, testament to student’s community service involvement, etc. NOTE: All recommendation letters must be included with your scholarship application.

5. Applicant must upload one letter of recommendation from the chapter’s Graduate Advisor that provides detailed information on the applicant’s character, leadership skills, and involvement in the applicant’s respective organization. 

 

6. All requested items must be included in order for the applicant’s scholarship packet to be considered complete. This scholarship application must be submitted to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website no later than 11:59 p.m. May 24, 2024. Applications that are incomplete and/or not submitted by May 31, 2023 will not be eligible for consideration. 

 

Scholarship Award Announcement
