High School Student

 

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was established on May 10, 1930 and is currently comprised of nine international Greek letter sororities and fraternities:  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

 

A local NPHC was chartered in Columbia, SC on June 8, 1960. The member organizations have a strong focus on community service and uplift. For that reason, this $500 college scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior in a Richland or Lexington County School District that exhibits considerable concern for the community through service.

Scholarship Criteria

1. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enter a four-year college/university in the fall of 2022 and possess qualities of leadership, scholarship, dependability and service Applicant must be attending a public high school in a Richland or Lexington County School District.


2.  Applicant must have a cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. 

 

3.  Applicant must upload a completed application and official transcript to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website.


4. Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation. One letter should be from a guidance counselor/director or one of your present/former high school teachers. The other letter should be from a person in the community that can verify a minimum of 3 months continuous community service in the current school year (i.e. your pastor, Sunday school teacher, former/present employer or mentor). Recommendation letters should include:  length of time working with student, insight to student’s character, testament to student’s community service involvement, etc.  NOTE: All recommendation letters must be included with your scholarship application.

5. All requested items must be included in order for the applicant’s scholarship packet to be considered complete. This scholarship application must be submitted to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website no later than 11:59 p.m. April 15, 2022. Applications that are incomplete and/or not submitted by April 15, 2022 will not be eligible for consideration. 

Scholarship Award Announcement

Scholarship awards will be announced via email the week of May 2nd

 

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend the NPHC Scholarship Recognition Program., which will be held in June. Program details will be included in the scholarship award email announcement. 

 

Scholarship awards checks are made payable to the student and are dispersed upon submission of proof of college enrollment by the student. This is typically a letter from your institution or a copy of your fall semester class schedule. This information is usually submitted in August.

 

Scholarship Application Checklist

Before submitting your scholarship application, please make sure you have included/uploaded the following:
 

1. Completed scholarship application

 

2. High school transcript
 

3. Letter of recommendation from Guidance Counselor/Director or present/former high school teacher
 

4. Letter of recommendation from a person in the community that can verify community service activities (i.e. pastor, Sunday School teacher, former/present employer or mentor). This letter should be accompanied by proof of three (3) months consecutive community service.
 

5. Upload your application to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website by 11:59 p.m. April 15, 2022

INSTRUCTIONS TO ACCESSING THE APPLICATION: Click on the link Scholarship Application for High School Seniors.  The electronic application will allow you to provide all criteria information required to include uploading applicable documents.  Acceptable document file types include but are not limited to .doc, .docx, .pdf, .jpeg, etc. All requested items must be included in order for the applicant’s scholarship packet to be considered complete.
 

Applications that are incomplete or submitted after 11:59 pm on April 15, 2022 will not be eligible for consideration. A checklist is included for your convenience.

College Student

 

A local National Pan-Hellenic Council was chartered in Columbia, SC on June 8, 1960. The member organizations have a strong focus on community service and uplift. For that reason, this $500 scholarship will be awarded to a current college student that is an active, financial member of an NPHC-member organization. The student must exhibit considerable concern for the community through service above and beyond service executed by his/her undergraduate chapter.

Scholarship Criteria

1. Applicant must be a college student and member of an NPHC-member organization attending a four-year college/university in the fall of 2022 and possess qualities of leadership, scholarship, dependability and service. Eligible colleges/universities include Allen University, Benedict College, Columbia College, Morris College, Newberry College, University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC), and Voorhees College.

 
2.  Applicant must have a cumulative college undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. 

 

3.  Applicant must upload a completed application and official transcript to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website.


4. Applicant must upload one letter of recommendation from a person in the community that can verify a minimum of 3 months continuous community service in the current school year above and beyond service initiatives implemented by the undergraduate chapter of membership (i.e. your pastor, non-profit organization volunteer coordinator, etc.). Recommendation letters should include:  length of time working with student, insight to student’s character, testament to student’s community service involvement, etc. NOTE: All recommendation letters must be included with your scholarship application.

5. Applicant must upload one letter of recommendation from the chapter’s Graduate Advisor that provides detailed information on the applicant’s character, leadership skills, and involvement in the applicant’s respective organization. 

 

6. All requested items must be included in order for the applicant’s scholarship packet to be considered complete. This scholarship application must be submitted to the NPHC at Columbia, SC website no later than 11:59 p.m. April 15, 2022. Applications that are incomplete and/or not submitted by April 15, 2022 will not be eligible for consideration.
